xmorbidcuriosityx:

A council has given away a £375,000 manor house after potential buyers were put off by rumours of hauntings, ghosts and ghouls

Wymering Manor in Portsmouth, Hants, is said to be haunted by a choir of nuns who scuttle across hallways as well as a host of unseen hands which reach out and touch passers by.

The property, thought to be the oldest house in Portsmouth having been mentioned in the 1086 Doomsday book, was placed on sale at an auction with a reserve price of £375,000 last year but failed to sell.

Portsmouth City Council have now donated the Grade II listed building to the Wymering Manor Trust along with a £30,000 grant for repair work.

The group will attempt to restore the house to its former glory, estimated at a total cost of more than £500,000, before opening it as a tourist attraction.

The spirits of whispering children and Sir Roderick of Porchester, who was murdered outside the manor in the middle ages, are said to be among the ghosts haunting the property.

Happy Birthday Lon Chaney, Jr.   (February 10th, 1906 - July 12th, 1973)

"All the best of the monsters played for sympathy. That goes for my father, Karloff, myself and all the others. They all won the audience's sympathy. The Wolf Man didn't want to do all those bad things. He was forced into them.", via the-dark-city.

"USA - A collection of anonymous photographs, the oldest dating from 1875. The book Haunted Air by Ossian Brown with a foreword by David Lynch dating from 2010 takes us into the atmosphere of the costumes Halloween party, between 1875 and 1955. Some photographs are still frightening."

Some first photos of Halloween, dating from the XIXth century to the 50's. Very interesting and fantastic, some costumes remind me The Nightmare Before Christmas!

fearof-theunknown:

Scott Martin and his family encountered a mysterious dark entity while traveling home by taxi. The incident occurred at around 10:30pm when they spotted a figure darting across the road in front of them. Likening it to the legendary Spring Heeled Jack, the family were so terrified by what they"d seen that night that their son was too scared to sleep and even the taxi driver was hesitant to drive home on his own. It isn"t the first such incident on record either, investigator Neil Arnold has heard of a similar case: "About three of four years ago I got a report of a woman driving when a dark figure walked across the road and she crashed her car to avoid it," he said.

"I spoke to her and she was absolutely terrified. So witnesses are clearly seeing something." Jack Bowman, 32, writer and director with the Wireless Theatre Company who produced a three part radio series on the legend of Spring Heeled Jack, said: "What absolutely intrigues me about this is that Spring Heeled Jack hasn't been seen since 1986. distortus:

Gilles de Rais (a French nobleman) is considered to be the precursor to the modern serial killer. Before he began his killing spree, he rode as a military captain in the army lead by St Joan of Arc – though it is unlikely that she knew him. He was accused and ultimately convicted of torturing, raping and murdering dozens, if not hundreds, of young children, mainly boys.

According to surviving accounts, Rais lured children, mainly young boys who were blond haired and blue eyed (as he had been as a child), to his residences, and raped, tortured and mutilated them, often ejaculating, perhaps via masturbation, over the dying victim. He and his accomplices would then set up the severed heads of the children in order to judge which was the most fair. The precise number of Rais's victims is not known, as most of the bodies were burned or buried. The number of murders is generally placed between 80 and 200; a few have conjectured numbers upwards of 600. The victims ranged in age from six to eighteen and included both sexes. Although Rais preferred boys, he would make do with young girls if circumstances required.

At the transcript of the trial, one of Gilles servants Henriet (an accomplice to his crimes) described the actions of his master, which were essentially:

Henriet soon began to collect children for his master, and was present whilst he massacred them. They were murdered invariably in one room at Machecoul. The marshal used to bathe in their blood; he was fond of making Gilles do Sillé, Pontou, or Henriet torture them, and he experienced intense pleasure in seeing them in their agonies. But his great passion was to welter in their blood. His servants would stab a child in the jugular vein, and let the blood squirt over him. The room was often steeped in blood. When the horrible deed was done, and the child was dead, the marshal would be filled with grief for what he had done, and would toss weeping and praying on a bed, or recite fervent prayers and litanies on his knees, whilst his servants washed the floor, and burned in the huge fireplace the bodies of the murdered children. With the bodies were burned the clothes and everything that had belonged to the little victims. An insupportable odour filled the room, but the Maréchal do Retz inhaled it with delight.

The Hill of Crosses is a site of pilgrimage about 12 km north of the city of Šiauliai, in northern Lithuania. The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising.Over the centuries, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 55,000 in 1990 and 100,000 in 2006.

Twelve Apostles Standing Stones (west Yorshire, UK)

Situated 1264 feet above sea level, the Twelve Apostles Standing Stones (once known as the Druids Chair and the Druidical Dial Circle) is the second highest ancient monument on Rombald's Moor and probably dates from 3500-4000 years. The stones stand close to the crossing of two prehistoric paths probably used for trans Pennine trading and amidst what has been described as an 'extensive ancient ceremonial landscape'. Those earlier travelers probably took advantage of Black Beck Well which is position about 200 yards from the Twelve Apostles.

Arthur Raistrick (1896-1991), a local archaeologist visited the site in 1929 and speculated that the circle could have originally had 20 stones with a single stone in the centre.

As with some other stone circles, there are reports of UFO or Earth Light type activity. One sighting took place in 1976. Three members of the Royal Observer Corps saw a white silent sphere hovering low over the stone circle whilst they were out on exercises. It remained motionless, then suddenly shot straight up into the sky eventually vanishing. Two witnesses saw a similar light in July 1990. They were at the Backstone circle one night and saw a white ball of light on the horizon about a mile or so away. It approached the Twelve Apostles from the west and when it reached the stones it became stationery. It then made a series of strange manoeuvres, backtracking at high speed, doing a 180° turn, returning to the circle before heading off to west where it had originally come from, apparently pursued by an Royal Air Force fighter which was seen heading in the direction which the light had taken.
